The start of your career

There’s never a dull moment here - the work we do is continually changing as lots of things dictate our priorities and influence what activities we need to focus on, so no two days are ever the same.

Did you know, we have over 200 different kinds of roles and are the most diverse employer in the Borough?

Many people don’t realise the range of opportunities that exist within the Council from plumbers to carers to administrators to gardeners…

We genuinely believe in our Apprenticeship programme and are really proud and committed to it and we want to continue to provide opportunities to recruit young people from our very own Borough.  This ensures we keep encouraging new and fresh ideas, giving local opportunities to local people to do the best for our Borough and help support our future.

Don’t just take our word for it though; here is what our current Apprentices say about working for us;

app3jpg.jpg“I’m really enjoying myself in Housing Needs, it’s such a big area and I feel like I’m learning loads. My team are great they’ve got such a good sense of humour and have been really supportive. If I’m struggling with something they take time to help me and I am now confident dealing with more complex cases. I love college too and have made loads of friends there.”

Sophie Taylor – Housing Needs Apprentice

“I decided to apply for an Apprenticeship at Blackburn with Darwen Council as I didn’t feel that University was for me, and I’m so happy I did.

Everyone has been really welcoming and I feel like I’ve learned so much in such a short space of time. At the moment I am working with schools on the roll out of a new system which I really enjoy. I get to work with colleagues from different areas of the Council and I’m currently writing guidance notes to help managers and employees with the new functions of the system. I would say to anyone thinking about an Apprenticeship with Blackburn with Darwen Council to just go for it!”

Heeba Toheed – HR Systems Apprentice

Case Study : Anthony Oliver – Business Support Officer, Children’s Services

app4.jpgAnthony joined us in 2015 and completed his Apprenticeship in Summer 2017 and now works as a Business Support Officer in Children’s Services.

He said

“Being an Apprentice for Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council gave me a fantastic opportunity to develop my skills in the workplace and also develop myself as a person. The work skills I have gained from the apprenticeship have helped me to adapt within a new team and to an unfamiliar environment.

I gained a lot of confidence, become more independent and I learned lots of transferrable skills.  The support I was given by my team during my Apprenticeship was amazing and this has helped me to gain a full time role once my Apprenticeship finished.”
